Design of Mk3 Coaches for Chiltern Railways Case Study

Design of Mk3 Coaches for Chiltern Railways

The Project

In 2009 Chiltern Railways planned to refurbish their newly acquired Mk3 coaching stock for use on the London Marylebone to Birmingham service.

DeltaRail was approached because we offer customised design services for all types of rolling stock, ensuring that the final design is well conceived, achievable and cost effective - whilst also complying with regulatory standards. Chiltern's aspiration was to create a 'new' vehicle perception of the coaches giving a high quality passenger environment while maintaining the good ride characteristics and quietness of the Mk3 coach.

We were contracted to produce a complete design package which consisted of converting the concept design to an engineered solution. This included production of manufacturing drawings, documentation and compliance against relevant industry regulations, including the new PRM-TSI (Persons with Reduced Mobility) to enable passenger use beyond 2019.

The modernisation of the rolling stock includes:

  • Power operated bodyside doors.
  • A Passenger Information System (PIS).
  • New standard and wheelchair accessible toilet cubicles.
  • New Crashworthiness seating and interior design.
  • CCTV fitment.
  • Power operated bodyend doors between vehicles.
  • Controlled Emission Tanks for Toilets.
  • At seat sockets for laptops/phones.
  • Exterior Livery.

The Benefits

The new designs have been realised using 3D CAD modelling software. This helps the customer to visualise a range of proposed layouts and gives the project team confidence that the final design can be realised with minimal risk.
