ON OPERATIONS, ON TRACK AND ON TRAIN
eZine | August 2011
Much has happened since our last newsletter was issued in March, including the publication in the UK of the important McNulty Value for Money Review and Network Rail's announcements on the devolution of its route structure.

This has also been a busy few months at DeltaRail. Our signalling control business has achieved a major milestone with the launch of its next generation product IECC Scalable. Other highlights have been our successes at the Network Rail Partnership Awards for IECC installations at Reading and the North London Line, and an order from Network Rail for the TracklineTwo track geometry measurement system.

Use the link in the Newsletter to follow our new Twitter feed where we will post regular information about what is happening.
WHO'S WHO AT DELTARAIL
Tom Ross - International Channel Sales Manager
Tom joined DeltaRail about three years ago with experience gained over many years in the IT industry in delivering value-added solutions to customers.

Working with our appointed solution partners, Tom is part of the team responsible for our partner strategy around the world to make our software, hardware and services widely available. So far the strategy has proved to be highly successful. Tom says "Through working with strong industry partners we aim to deliver the best software, hardware and solutions with our partners providing effective local service and support".

Tom currently works with our partners in Australia and New Zealand, Spain and Portugal, and the USA. Tom says that "One example of success in our partner programme is the 20% growth, in the last 12 months, in our VAMPIRE vehicle dynamics simulation business. Because of this success we now plan to add further partners, in a second phase of expansion, in territories where there is a strong need for our products and services."

READING STATION TEAM AWARDED SPECIAL AWARD AT NETWORK RAIL PARTNERSHIP AWARDS
A special award to the team delivering the Reading Station Project (a mix of DeltaRail, Bechtel, Bam Nuttall, Jacobs, Buckingham Group, Reading Borough Council and First Great Western) was made by Network Rail at their third Partnership Awards event, held at the Natural History Museum in London on 13th July.

Six hundred representatives of the rail industry’s suppliers and partners gathered to hear Sir David Higgins, chief executive of Network Rail, praise their efforts and professionalism.

DeltaRail engineers worked through Christmas 2010 to deliver the major signalling control project at Reading. The new IECC control system for Reading comprises four workstations with Automatic Route-Setting (ARS) functionality to optimise train movements in and around the area.

In the programme for the event David Higgins said:

"These awards are an opportunity for Network Rail to recognise the contribution and support provided by our partners. Tonight we will celebrate your achievements over the past year, which have helped us build a better railway for Britain".

DeltaRail was a team member in four of the seven projects recommended for awards, and our IECC was the control system recommended in three of these four team awards. DeltaRail was also Highly Commended, together with Atkins and Carillion, for the North London Railway Infrastructure Project where new IECC systems were installed at Upminster.

DELTARAIL TO SUPPLY IECC SCALABLE SIGNALLING CONTROL SYSTEM AT ELY TO NORWICH
DeltaRail's IECC Scalable signalling control system will be located at Network Rail's Cambridge box as part of the Modular Signalling GRIP 5-8 Ely - Thetford - Norwich (ETN) pilot project awarded by Network Rail to Signalling Solutions. The project will introduce SSL's Modular Signalling solution integr8 into the network for the first time.

IECC Scalable retains the original IECC functionality and level of automation, and is very flexible in terms of the area that it can control, allowing signallers to control larger areas at less busy periods. This important development puts the proven functionality of the existing system onto a new software architecture to deliver additional benefits:
  • Reduced hardware cost and equipment room space requirements.
  • Re-configurable workstations to allow manning to be matched to traffic levels.
  • Workstations and signalling interfaces can be located remotely using open communications.
  • Interfaces to ERTMS/ETCS and strategic traffic management tools.
The final commissioning at Ely-Norwich will be held over two 27 hour weekend possessions in July 2012.

WHEELCHEX PAPER PUBLISHED AT THE APTA RAIL CONFERENCE - BOSTON, USA
MNR's John Kesich and DeltaRail's Adrian Golby attended the June 2011 APTA Rail Conference in Boston to present a paper on MNR's Wheel Impact Load detection (WILD) system, which is based on DeltaRail's WheelChex technology.

Prior to the installation of the WILD system MNR estimate that the average fleet (wheel) dynamic to static load ratio was 2.5. This has now been reduced to 1.8, a reduction in peak track loading of 28%.

The paper describes the WILD system, explaining how this condition monitoring system has been successfully implemented on all four tracks of the Park Avenue Tunnel, where the Harlem, Hudson and New Haven lines converge on the way into the Grand Central Terminal.

NETWORK RAIL ORDERS DELTARAIL TRACK GEOMETRY SYSTEM
Following a successful trial of the TracklineTwo track geometry measurement system, Network Rail has placed an order for an operational system where the track geometry data is collected and given a position/time stamp in common with that allocated to visual data generated by video inspection equipment.

The benefit of linking measured track geometry data with video information is that it is now far easier to locate and identify track defects in a way that is meaningful to those responsible for maintenance. This saves time and money in the process of identifying and rectifying track faults.

The TracklineTwo system is also shortly to be deployed in its first road-rail application in Spain where the compact and robust design makes it an ideal solution to the problem of obtaining track geometry information.
