AEA Technology Rail Wins Contracts Worth £8.4 Million Including Major Signalling Contract for Edinburgh Waverley Signalling Centre
AEA Technology Rail has won two new contracts worth a combined £8.4 million.
First, the Company has won a £7 million contract to update Edinburgh Waverley's signalling centre to a more modern, reliable and efficient type called an IECC - Integrated Electronic Control Centre.
The contract for the IECC equipment has been awarded by Westinghouse Rail Systems Limited which has been selected by Network Rail acting on behalf of the Scottish Executive, as the main signalling and telecoms contractor for the Edinburgh scheme.
The new signalling control system will deliver performance benefits, which will underpin the planned increase in traffic through Edinburgh Waverley from 24 trains/hr to 28 trains/hr. In particular, train performance will be boosted through the introduction of AEA Technology Rail's unique Automatic Routesetting System which provides consistent routesetting and automatic traffic regulation during busy traffic conditions.
Andrew McCree, Chief Executive, AEA Technology plc said: 'This order confirms the strength of AEAT's position in the signalling market. There are a number of further good prospects in this area which AEAT is determined to pursue vigorously. '
AEA Technology Rail has supplied or upgraded all nineteen IECCs in the UK, including Yoker in Glasgow. Network Rail has published plans for 5 further major signalling projects which will be awarded over the next year.
The new equipment will replace 1970 vintage signalling control panels with the modern VDUbased equivalent.
AEAT's Glengarnock Technology Centre in Ayrshire will play a key role in this and future projects. This contract award provides a strong basis upon which AEAT can increase its presence in the Scottish rail market.
Secondly, the company has won a contract valued up to £1.4 million for design and installation services on a major train telecommunications project for Siemens Transportation Systems. Work has already begun.
