Extension of High Speed Rail System Contract in Taiwan
AEA Technology Rail ("the Company") has won a £1 million extension to its existing contract to provide technical and operational expertise to enable the certification of Taiwan's US$14 billion high speed rail project.
AEA Technology Rail is part of the Lloyd's Register Project Team ("LRPT") which was appointed as the Independent Verification and Validation ("IV&V") institution. Following the extension of the contract, the value of the project for AEA Technology Rail is now valued at approximately £9 million.
The new railway service will commence operation in October 2006. It will run at 300kmh on 345 km of new track between Taipei and Kaohsiung in the south of the island.
LRPT is responsible for the certification of the safety, quality and operability of the entire project including the civil structures, trains, signalling, electrification, communications and power systems, stations and depots and the operational and maintenance procedures and facilities. LRPT will certify that the railway is compliant with the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corporation's requirements and that it is fit to operate.
AEA Technology Rail undertakes its railway systems assessments using a team based in LRPT in Taiwan, supplemented by specialist expertise from the UK. The project began in July 2000.
Stuart Hill, Managing Director, AEA Technology Rail said: ‘AEA Technology Rail continues to prove its expertise towards improving railway safety and performance at both a domestic and international level. The challenging nature of this project is a further endorsement of the Company's expertise.' This contract follows the recent £7 million contract awarded to AEA Technology Rail to update Edinburgh Waverley's signalling centre and the £1.4 million contract from Siemens Transportation Systems for design and installation services.
