Wireless Sensor Technology to Set a New Standard in Railway Maintenance

Kelvin Institute agrees partnership with leading technology company AEA Technology Rail.

The Kelvin Institute (Kelvin), AEA Technology Rail (AEA), and the University of Strathclyde (Strathclyde) announced today a technology development partnership. The partnership brings together Strathclyde and Kelvin’s research and development in wireless sensor networks with AEA’s extensive technical expertise in delivering solutions to the railway industry.

The partnership will focus on the development of wireless sensor networks that monitor key parameters of railway sub-systems. Currently, sensors have to be “hardwired” together to form a network. The wireless technology will reduce operating costs, ease installation and help to identify costly engineering problems before they occur.

The technology will combine advanced sensors, wireless communication technologies and state-of-the-art analysis and reporting to provide a new standard in railway maintenance.

The technology will be offered to passenger and freight rail operators worldwide as a means of achieving cost savings and quality improvements in their maintenance operations.

Stephen Breslin, Chief Executive of the Kelvin Institute, said: "The partnership with AEA Technology Rail demonstrates the innovation that is possible when business needs are matched with the expertise in Scottish universities. The department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Strathclyde is one of the top rated in the UK and we look forward to working with their experts and AEA Technology Rail to develop these important solutions."

Stuart Hill, Managing Director of AEA Technology Rail, commented:

“Working with the Kelvin Institute and the University of Strathclyde is an innovation accelerator for us, enabling us to develop this technology faster and bring it to market more quickly."
