AEA Supporting Efficient Investment, Planning and Operations in the Rail Industry
AEAT Consultancy, in conjunction with the London e-Science Centre, is currently working on this forward-looking project, funded through the Department for Transport's Horizons Research Programme. The objective is to support efficient investment, planning and operations activities in the rail industry, by effectively combining existing datasets to provide a more detailed and appropriate representation of rail travel in Great Britain. The work covers a four-stage process:
- Review and appraisal of existing passenger rail journeys datasets.
- Design of a methodology for processing available datasets into a central database of rail journeys.
- Design of a central electronic store of the information, with appropriate access for users within government and the rail industry.
- Presentation of the conclusions to main industry stakeholders in government and commercial organisations.
AEAT Consultancy is already experienced in delivering a wide range of projects to customers in the rail industry, including government and commercial clients. Our activities include expert technical advice, specialist data analysis, software development and policy advice. Our staff are drawn from a range of specialist areas, including Operational Research, engineering, and the wider railway. This combined experience provides a team with a fundamental understanding of rail operations and management.
In particular, through our policy and strategy work we have developed a strong understanding of the industry's information requirements. Other areas relevant to this project that we have experience in include:
- Modelling passenger journey choices
- Management and interpretation of major passenger surveys
- Calibration of passenger demand models
- On-train measurement and data management systems
- Research and development in data analysis and forecasting
The project began in October 2005 and is set for completion in July 2006. It is valued at around £100,000.
