WSPERŽ
The Wheel Slide Protection Evaluation Rig is a unique facility that enables a train's anti-lock braking system (WSP) to be thoroughly tested and evaluated under realistic simulated low adhesion. In essence, the rig "fools" the WSP electronics into thinking it is on-board a real train which is braking in slippery conditions. The decisions that the WSP system then makes are monitored and fed into the real time model to give a prediction of stopping performance, wheel damage and the amount of air consumed during the stop:
WSPER Test facility - The Pneumatic Rig
Using the facility, manufacturers of WSP systems can test, refine and re-test their WSP electronics to improve its performance. So successful has the rig been that virtually all new passenger rolling stock in the UK is equipped with a WSPER optimised WSP system.
