Noise & Vibration

The Acoustics Team provides consultancy, research and development in all aspects of noise and vibration created by and affecting the rail industry. This is becoming an increasingly important issue for the industry with the recent introduction of the various European Directives including the Environmental Noise Directive and the Physical Agents Directives on noise and vibration.

    Noise Mapping

The Acoustics Team are also involved with various European committees and projects, including "IMAGINE" which is formulating a harmonised noise prediction procedure for road, rail, aviation and industry. Recent research by the Acoustics Team on the effects of rail head roughness has been incorporated into the "Environmental Noise Regulations 2006" in England, Wales, Scotland and N Ireland.

Although the team's activities have a railway emphasis, they also undertake work for a wide range of non-railway customers in such diverse fields as the petroleum and chemical industries, demolition and construction, waste management and road traffic.
