Vehicle Dynamics

The suspension systems used on railway vehicles vary tremendously, from leaf springs used on freight vehicles up to the modern active suspension systems required for today's high speed passenger trains. The Vehicle Dynamics Team has expertise spanning the entire range and this, combined with a fundamental understanding of the interactions at the wheel-rail interface, enables the team to tackle problems from understanding and modelling of Rolling Contact Fatigue in wheels and rails to producing models of rolling stock sufficiently accurate for the purposes of vehicle acceptance.

Measuring Rail Profiles on Nottingham Tram

The Vehicle Dynamics Team have over 150 man years of experience covering almost every aspect of vehicle dynamics. The team work closely with the developers of DeltaRail's vehicle dynamics software package VAMPIREŽ to undertake advanced simulations for a wide variety of customers (please click here for further information on VAMPIREŽ).

Examining the Wheel/Rail Interface Using VAMPIREŽ

Using VAMPIREŽ along with data analysis tools such as nCode, the team tackle issues such as:

  • modelling to investigate, demonstrate and mitigate the causes of derailments
  • optimisation of wheel and rail profiles
  • evaluation of the dynamic effects of vehicle modifications
  • investigation of key issues facing the railway such as Rolling Contact Fatigue (RCF)
  • assessment of vehicles against UK and international standards through the use of validated simulations (DeltaRail is registered as a UK Vehicle Acceptance Body)
  • modelling of S&C to mitigate derailment propensity
  • vehicle gauging
  • prediction of passenger comfort
  • evaluation of track forces & loads
